The iPhone 5c. Colorful. Refreshing. Revolutionary. Cheap.
Apple thrived from being a “luxury” good. It was what made people want to have an iPhone. With the iPhone 5c, Apple risks tarnishing its brand by lowering prices and making it more available to everyone. This brand identity crisis will cause people to move on to "cooler" and more prestigious things.
Yes, the release of the 5c will increase sales and will have huge profit margins for Apple; however, I believe that it will be a short-term effect. In the long-term, if Apple continues to produce more products like the iPhone 5c, it will lose its grandness. The Apple brand will become similar to what Motorola has been until recently– irrelevant. Furthermore. I believe Apple’s decision will cause a decline in long-term profits due to this brand identity issue.
“To make a contribution to the world
by making tools for the mind that advance humankind.”
Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices with iPad.
Apple’s decline has already begun. Overall, people loved Apple because it seemed like the company was producing good quality products for its clients. People felt as if Apple cared about them. Is that the case now? People will truly feel as if their prized possession has become simply a tool for profit. No one wants to deal with a company that cares only about profit. Like Walmart.
We are witnessing the end of the Golden Age of Apple unless it changes its mindset. Yes, investors and companies are in the business to make a profit. Just don’t risk losing a strong and faithful clientele to make a few extra bucks. In the long-term, you'll need the ones who are faithful by your side. Without us, Apple is just like any other company making technology products.
Continue to invest in your faithful customers. Your profits will come.
